Caring Beyond the Call of Duty

Sent on the behalf of James S. McHone, M.D., COL, USA (Ret) To My Fellow Surgeons and West Point Sports Medicine Physicians: I was very honored as I am sure you were to receive the recent email from John A. Feagin, MD., COL, USA (Ret), outlining his selection for induction into the Army Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his work as the Army Team Physician and founder of the Army Sports Medicine Fellowship. In reviewing my records, I found the original program from the 2004 meeting to dedicate the fellowship held at Arden House and Kimsey Athletic Center. I thought you would be interested in seeing this program and additional program history since then (click on one of the links below for a custom built web page with this program’s history). It is very gracious of Dr Feagin to thank all of us for our work and support of Army Sports Medicine and to credit us for carrying his sports medicine torch which he feels led to this honor for him. Unfortunately, my health precludes me from attending the ceremony but I hope many of you can attend (sign up NLT September 22, 2014). James S. From Dr. Mearsheimer - Latest Ukraine Issue

From Dr. Mearsheimer j-mearsheimer@uchicago.edu Folks, I have a piece that just came out on the Ukraine crisis in Foreign Affairs. I have attached a copy in case anyone is interested. It should generate a lot of controversy, as it cuts against the conventional wisdom in Washington. Also, in mid-June, Chatham House and the New York Times sponsored a big debate in London on the Ukraine issue. Roger Cohen of the NY Times editorial page moderated and the participants included me, Michael McFaul (the former US ambassador to Moscow), Dmitry Trenin (a top Russian strategist), and Chrystia Freedland (an MP from Canada). I have enclosed a link that has a video of the debate if anyone is interested in watching it. Best. John Video Article

Invite all USMA 1970 Classmates to NCEA 2014

From Classmate Jim Sullivan - Brothers, Our class gift to our Alma Mater, The National Conference on Ethics in America, will be held at West Point between Sunday, 19 October 2014 and Saturday, 25 October, 2014. It will last three days, and the exact days are yet to be set. Due to sequestration, NCEA has had ups and downs in the last two years -- on again, off again. With a new emphasis on the need to strengthen the pillar of character formation at school, NCEA has a new format, and is more cadet-centered and more focused on setting our house in order, with no outreach to other institutions for this year. When the Supe perceives that we are back on track as a bastion of character formation, he will return to NCEA’s outreach mode. So while the exact usage of our gift is under redesign, this letter comes to you from the Class NCEA committee with the authority of class president Dave Brown and the class executive group. This is an invitation to all members of ’70 to come to West Point for the Conference to observe, to provide strong transparency for Class members to see NCEA’s weight and impact, and to constructively assess our class’s participation, pro and con. In the future, the committee may be asked to help the Academy with the outreach effort to other universities, to populate future conferences with both delegates and speakers/mentors. Many of us have relationships which could help that mission. There is no compensation for travel expenses to NCEA; we are strictly on our own nickel. In the past 29 years, there have been a dozen or so of us at the conference. The more the better. If you have questions, please call me at 219-616-1976, or email at Papasully@aol.com. I look forward to seeing you at West Point in October. Best Regards, on behalf of the Class of ’70 NCEA Committee, Serve with Integrity, Sully James P. Sullivan, Jr., Ed. D., P. E. Army Scholarship Fund

Fellow Classmates,
Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who have died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.  This marks a special day when all of us should reflect on the sacrifices and service of these brave men and women who have served our great nation, particularly those who have made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of all of us and our Nation.  This day also presents an important opportunity for us to express our thanks for their service and to honor and note the special places they have in the hearts of all American citizens.

Please take a moment on this special occasion to thank those who have served, and especially to think about our fallen classmates and members of the Long Gray Line, and our fallen class son, Lieutenant Scott Love.  This is an ideal time to consider making a donation to the Army Scholarship Foundation in Scott's memory to help sustain his scholarship for years to come.  Please visitwww.ArmyScholarshipFoundation.org or send a check to the Foundation at 11700 Preston Road, Suite 660-301, Dallas, TX 75230.

Thank you,
Jeff Gault gaultrj@prodigy.net

Larry Henderson

From Classmate Tommy Maertens -

Hello,

I really hate doing this but we are all military folks so, this is just to give you a "heads up" on the situation with our dear friend, classmate, and my Happy Daze brother, Larry Henderson.  Based on the medical situation I have received from Larry's family...his time to "grip hands though it be from the shadows" is fast approaching; sadly.

I would hope that when the time comes, we can gather as proud members of the Class of 1970 to honor Larry and celebrate his life.  I know his family would really appreciate being with you during the services.

Obviously at the appropriate time, details will follow and I will insure that you are made aware of them just as soon as I can.

If you know of other classmates in your area who may want to participate, please pass this along. Satch...would you please contact Bill Green; thanks.

Serve with Integrity,
Tommy

Dave Brown Sends To the Class of 1970

From: Brown, David L.
Sent: Monday, April 28, 2014 1:32 PM
To: frank.j.monaco@gmail.com; tobyquirk@icloud.com
Cc: Brown, David L.
Subject: 2014 NCEA Update

To the Class of 1970,

All of you are well aware of the turmoil NCEA has experienced in the past one and a half years from the beginning of Sequestration, including the change of command by the Superintendent's from Gen Huntoon to Gen Caslen.

This included the cancellation of 2013 NCEA followed by a USCC and cadet centric abbreviated NCEA version in early 2014. Gen Caslen preferred that format until, in his view, he could "right the ship" at the Academy. He is now pleased with some of the progress at the Academy on multiple fronts including that on the ethics and honor front.

Up until this time we have been treading water and waiting for a definitive decision about the future of NCEA. We now have the preliminaries of that decision that the Supe is now staffing with Dept of the Army.

Our Class of '70 NCEA committee currently led by Toby Quirk and recently led by Sully, Sculley, and the many others who have given unselfishly of their time, have guided us and steered us through this difficult times.

The 2014 conference will be held at the regularly scheduled time this fall as an Academy and cadet centric conference, then.. In 2015 it will return to a new improved form of the original event!!

Click here for some files  that will provide you a complete account of what has transpired over time and the timeline associated with same.

This is an extremely good resolution for NCEA, the cadets, the Academy, and our class. Thank you for your support and patience during these difficult times.

David

PS
Addendum of Toby's most recent communique (  to give each of you a starting point to trace these events backwards through the attachments). Major Knox, the current OIC of NCEA at the Simon center for the Professional Military Ethic sent me a second draft of the concept for NCEA October  2014. It is attached as a word.doc. There is virtually no reflection of our input to the first draft of the concept paper for NCEA. I focused our conversation on what they want USMA ’70 to do with regards to NCEA. We had a very collegial conversation.

1. Mission to USMA ’70 1. Bring more USMA ’70 personnel to NCEA Oct. 19-22, 2014 to increase buy-in for the new model and 2. Outreach to “premier” institutions to develop a collaborative network with the primary objective of sharing resources related to moral character development.

2. Superintendent Caslen continues to espouse the importance of NCEA with staff, faculty and his senior leadership at Department of the Army. At a meeting yesterday about NCEA he stated that the most significant outcome of February’s conference was candid dialog between cadets, staff, faculty and the superintendent’s office. He also said that he wants to continue the internal NCEA because he still wants to focus on improving the moral climate at West Point and he sees it as a very effective tool to do that.

3. Regarding outreach, Major Knox believes that we need to develop a new strategy for NCEA resulting in a collaboration between West Point and other institutions that have character development resources currently established or in development. He wants to rely on the networks that  USMA ’70 classmates have to reach out to key people at these institutions and develop methods to share these resources and bring them to bear at future NCEA. This change in design and philosophy of the NCEA will result in major changes in the execution of the conference.

4. It is the position of the SCPME that they have the resources to develop and coordinate conference content but not much more, so they want to rely on USMA ’70 to help develop long-range strategy,  goals and objectives.

Black Knights' 12th Star victory over Navy during the 2013-14 season

"WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army baseball team rallied from a game-one defeat to take the next three games and earn the Black Knights' 12th Star victory over Navy during the 2013-14 season. The baseball win clinched both the Star series, 12-11, and the overall series versus the Mids, 18-13.
It is the first time that Army has won more star competitions than the Mids since going 11-8-2 during the 1995-96 campaign. It is the first time the Black Knights have posted a winning record against Navy since 2004-05 (17-14-1).
The fall season got the competiton off to a great start as the Black Knights won six of nine overall meetings and five of the eight star contested. The Mids regained control during the winter, posting an 8-3 overall mark and earning seven of the nine star competiton. Army rallied in the spring with a 9-2 overall record and a 5-1 star mark.
In additon to baseball, the volleyball team, the women's tennis team and the men's tennis team each earned multiple victories against the Mids. Volleyball won both regular season meetings, while the tennis squads won a regular-season match up and a Patriot League Tournament contest.
Army's star wins came in sprint football, golf, women's soccer, volleyball, men's cross country, women's basketball, rifle, women's outdoor track, women's tennis, men's tennis, lacrosse and baseball. In addition, the men's basketball team scored the first of its two regular-season meetings against its arch rival.
In the last two seasons, Army owns a 34-29-1 record against the Mids.
Army and Navy have one more possible meeting left on the schedule. The two teams could potentially meet in a best-of-three Patriot League baseball postseason series."

Msgr Robert F. McCormick

I am not sure if you heard, but a long time USCC Chaplain. Father Edson Wood, passed last week and while searching the MHT website for funeral arrangements, I found that Msgr. McCormick is alive and well (age 93) and the Chaplain  here : http://www.birgittines-us.com  - I have his telephone number and just got off the phone with him.  He is in contact with Cardinal O’Brien (another priest at Most Holy Trinity when we were cadets) and seems to be sharp as ever!  He married Paulette and I in 1971.  I asked him if would officiate at our 50th in 2021 (he would be 100 years old) and he reminded me that it was not up to him!
Let me know if you want his direct telephone number - we plan to visit him in the near future!

Recommendation from Tom Rozman

 Dear Friends,
The Huffington Post has posted

Georgetown University Press has reprinted one of the most important books on World War II. This story jumps off the pages like a spy thriller documenting Karski's experiences in the Polish Underground and one of the first accounts of slaughter of the Jews by Nazi Germany. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the current landscape in Europe.

West Point Marathon Team was sponsoring the 4th Annual Half Marathon, honoring Fallen Comrades on April 6th

Frank and Jim,

Thanks for sending the information I requested last week. The reason for my request was I received an e-mail last week announcing the West Point Marathon Team was sponsoring the 4th Annual Half Marathon, honoring Fallen Comrades on April 6th. In the past 3 years this run has only been open to Cadets. This year it is open to the public. April 6th, also happens to be my birthday. Unfortunately my days of running are over due to knee problems, however my wife is an active ultra runner. For my birthday present this year, I asked her to run this half marathon for me in remembrance of my 5 classmates who made the ultimate sacrifice. We are in the process of having technical running shirts (wicking) made up for her to wear during the run and for me as I cheer her on during the run, in memory of Brown, Steinfeld, Green, Minor, and Carlson.

I have attached the link to the website for this event.http://www.usma.edu/marathon/sitepages/halfmarathon.aspx

If you know of other classmates who might like to participate or get a shirt, please feel free to send this information to them and have them contact me. I plan to place the shirt order early next week.

Nick Sebastian - The Bird Man of Emeryville -

I am basically camera-averse, so these are
 rare photos of me,
 as
I was kinda proud of
the installation this morning
, sharing the
moment with these magnificent birds
, our beautiful and compelling neighbors...

Nick, aka, The Bird Man of Emeryville...

Enjoy -

Folks, I was on the Newshour last evening talking about Ukraine. Here is the link for anyone who might be interested.

I come on after a short interview with Margaret Warner on the subject.

I also published a piece in the National Interest on Taiwan's future that has received a lot of attention.

It was based on a talk I gave in Taiwan this past December. I thought some of you might find it interesting. Best. John

Annual Giving Office at the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG)

Dear Dr. David Brown, Greetings from West Point and Happy New Year! The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the various ways that the Annual Giving Office at the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) will reach out to graduates and friends of the Academy for annual support in 2014. As you know, the Academy and WPAOG have critical annual fund needs that must be met in order to achieve their budget requirements * Superintendent’s Annual Fund - This annual appeal’s mailing will begin in February. Signed by the 11th Dean of the Academic Board of USMA, BG (R) Daniel J. Kaufman ’68, the appeal will ask graduates, parents, and friends of the Academy for unrestricted support. Unrestricted gifts are arguably the most important gifts the Academy receives because they provide the Superintendent with maximum flexibility to direct funds where they are most needed. In addition to receiving the appeal, some of your classmates will receive a follow-up phone call from our calling program vendor, Advantage Consulting. As you may know, WPAOG is prohibited by law from utilizing cadets to solicit private donations—a best practice at most institutions of higher education. As such, we employ and train an experienced third party to make phone calls on the Academy’s behalf. * A Club - This year the solicitation will be mailed on a staggered schedule, beginning in February. Graduates will be given an opportunity to make unrestricted gifts to Army Athletics, which qualify for A Club priority points and benefits. In addition, team-specific appeals, known as “Friends of” letters, may be sent via e-mail throughout the year. These funds do not qualify for benefits and directly support the athletic teams. * Long Gray Line Fund - This solicitation letter will be mailed out to all graduates and friends in August. Our alumni organization requires private support to operate in lieu of dues and magazine subscription fees. The Long Gray Line Fund helps fund the operations of WPAOG on an annual basis. Please share this information with your classmates. As we receive many questions regarding the various annual appeals, we strive to provide additional information to graduates about their purpose and impact. If you have any questions regarding the Annual Giving program, please contact Lisa Benitez ’88, Senior Director of Annual Giving, at lisa.benitez@wpaog.org. As always, Thank You for all that you do for your Class, West Point, and WPAOG! Sincerely, Elena I. Meskill ’99 Director, Class Giving
