ROSS S. KELLY

Ross S. Kelly left this life and moved on to another, on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 5:50 p.m. due to respiratory failure. Ross has three children, Ross, Allison, and Caitlin, his wife, Susan, his mother, Jeanne, his brother, Randy and many friends who wish him well on his journey.
Ross was a 1970 graduate of West Point. He had a MA from Georgetown University in Government and National Security Affairs, and he attended the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1986. Ross was in the U.S. Army from 1970-1982 and in the Army Reserves from 1982-1999, and retired in the rank of Colonel.
Ross' Regular Army assignments included command, intelligence, and operations positions in the mechanized and airborne infantry, armored cavalry, and Special Forces, and as a strategic intelligence officer on the Army Staff. His deployments included service in Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Somalia. His many awards include the Army's Distinguished Service Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor, for valor in combat. Ross earned his DSC in 1972 while serving as an advisor to the Vietnamese 6th Paratroop Regiment during the Battle of An Loc.
As a Reserve officer, Ross held key Joint Operations positions in numerous SOCCENT and SOCCEUR deployments. Ross displayed initiative and innovation throughout his military career.
In his civilian career, Ross built a successful security assistance business that supported the Department of Energy and the Defense Industrial base. In 2004, he merged his company with Protection Strategies Incorporated and was instrumental in growing the company from 12 personnel to over 300 today.
Ross celebrated life everyday and showed this through his great sense of humor and story -telling. Ross was an avid reader and a student of military history. He also authored two books on counter-insurgency strategy that are still used in courses at West Point. He will always be remembered for the love he had for his family and his country.
Ross' family will have a private ceremony in North Carolina, and an Irish Celebration of his Life in Great Falls, VA. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans. Please view and sign the family guestbook at

Pat Sculley Sends - "Call for Assistance"

Call for assistance

Two important changes are being made to NCEA this year.

1. The Class of 1970 has been asked by SCPME to create a planning group to begin preparation at each conference for the following year’s conference. This group will attend the conference sessions to observe and assess the plenary speakers and the senior leader panels. During the breakout sessions, this group will develop recommended themes for the next year’s conference, develop guidelines for plenary speakers and senior leaders, and prepare a list of recommended plenary speakers and senior leaders. This group will meet with the COL Waters, the Director of SCPME, on Thursday morning after the conference to present their recommendations and discuss how the group will assist SCPME in recruiting the speakers and senior leaders. This group will be led by Pat Sculley. We are seeking classmates who will commit to participate in this group on an ongoing basis.
2. The faculty delegates attending the conference this year will be tasked to create two deliverables from the conference. On Monday, all faculty delegates will be organized into one group. They will attend the plenary speaker sessions. During the Monday breakout sessions, presentations will be made from specific attending universities on their honor and character development programs. On Tuesday, a small, pre-selected group of the faculty delegates will begin to outline and write a paper for publication from the conference. The subject of the article will be honor. This group will be led by Gus Lee. The remainder of the faculty delegates will spend Tuesday and Wednesday compiling best practices on all areas related to ethics and honors from all the universities attending the conference. SCPME would like 4 or 5 classmates with experience in group facilitation to assist with this effort. Experience in higher education is a plus but not a requirement. This group will be led by a USMA faculty member to be named.

In the past several years, classmates attending the conference have been allowed to observe the student small group discussions. In many cases this has been counter-productive to establishing the environment needed for the candid and honest exchange in the small group, which is essential to the success of the conference. Therefore, this year, all classmates attending the conference will be employed in the planning group or the faculty group.

If you are available to attend the conference, please contact Pat Sculley at patsculley@q.com and let him know in what capacity you would like to serve. This will be a great opportunity to work with SCPME in improving the conference and assisting them get an early start on the following year’s conference.

SCPME also asks that we continue to recruit universities and delegates for the conference. September is the month in which most schools commit. Please continue your efforts.

If you have any recommendations on faculty members with expertise in ethics and character development and who have been successful publishing their works, please recommend them to Gus Lee at guslee@earthlink.net

Pat Sculley Sends - NCEA 2011

August 2011
Dear Classmates,

My perspective is that ethics is the most fundamental issue we are facing today in our country. Every day, the media serves up another example of why I believe this. Our future leaders, our children and grandchildren, are watching more and more of our current supposedly leaders decide not to do the right thing.

The Class of ’70 was most fortunate in our education and training at West Point. Now, the National Conference on Ethics in America is an opportunity for us to make a small contribution back to the country. The conference annually provides college students from some 60 other institutions a positive experience in ethics. These students interact with and are challenged by leaders who are good examples and who demonstrate why doing the right thing will pay dividends in their careers.

I first observed the conference around 2003. I was blown away by the effect it was having. I go back every year, along with a number of our other classmates, just to get inspired again. I have never been disappointed in what I observe and experience. The faculty at West Point welcomes our participation and seeks our advice and assistance in improving the conference.
Because I deeply believe in the ideals West Point infused in me and because I had the great fortune to obtain a most extraordinary education, I will contribute to the conference at whatever level I can afford for as long as I can. I hope you will help us be the change we seek.

Pat Sculley

PS: Please visit the Class NCEA Page to learn more about the Conference, and please consider a donation if you already haven't do so.
