Col. (Ret.) WILLIAM SAUNDERS, JR.
Col. (Ret.) William A. Saunders, Jr., 68, husband of Marilyn Lewis Saunders, died July 21, 2016.
Born in Cambridge, MA, February 14, 1948, he was a son of the late William A. Saunders, Sr. and Priscilla Mullen Saunders. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY and received his M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Col. Saunders retired from the United States Army after 27 years of service and later was employed by First Command as a Financial Advisor. He has made his home on Lake Greenwood since 2008.
An active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Col. Saunders was also a leader in the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in establishing a Prison Ministry in the Greenwood area.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two sons, Satch Saunders and wife Laura of Charlotte, NC and Scott Saunders and wife Jennifer of Greenville, SC and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Jim Saunders and wife Lynn of Williamsburg, VA and Bob Saunders and wife Robin of Atlanta, GA and one sister, Priscilla Shephard and husband David of Darien, CT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 AM Monday, July 25, 2016, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Rev. Father Timothy Tebalt officiating,
Burial with Full Military Honors will be in Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC at 1:00 PM Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local Knights of Columbus or to a charity of one's choice.
