Dinner After Bill Vogt's Funeral

James Kee sends -

After checking with Bruce Nolte, I made arrangements for a dinner following Bill Vogt’s funeral, for companymates, classmates, and friends. Bruce has discussed this with Kathi Vogt and she is fine with it, but will not be able to attend. She will be with family and church friends after the funeral.

The dinner will be at Key Bridge Marriot (1401 Lee highway, Arlington, 22209), at the first floor Revival Restaurant.

Key Bridge Marriot is close to Arlington Cemetery and easy to find (on Lee Highway Rt 29-westbound lane –Right next to Key Bridge and exit 73 off I-66 from either North or South –when travelling from South-turn left at N. Nash street into their parking lot.)

The restaurant is not normally open at that time –but they will open it only for us (reasonable separate charge – I will collect)

We can have separate checks and order from the entire menu – parking is validated for first 2 hrs - after that $7 for 3rd and $3 more for 4th.

They suggest cocktails at about 4:00 and we have dinner at 4:30 -4:45 (they are familiar with Arlington and they said people would be there after service in less than an hour –since outside service, with no Church ceremony). Know this is early dinner – but anybody travelling can then get on the road afterwards by 6:30 or 7:00 –just after rush hour completes!

Please let me know if you plan to attend (can change later – but need to give restaurant an approximate headcount)- please e-mail Jim at kee_jim@bah.com or call his cell at 703-216-1683.

Bill Vogt's Funeral

From Bruce Nolte:

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Could you please pass the following  message out to the Class:

Just a reminder to all that Bill Vogt’s funeral at Arlington is scheduled for 03 January at 2:30 PM.  The gathering point for the event will be the Administration Building.  Just tell the guard at the Arlington Cemetery main gate that you are attending COL Vogt’s funeral, and they will send you to the right place.

Merry Christmas to all.

Weekly Update from Boo Corrigan, Director of Army Athletics

From: Athletic.Director [mailto:Athletic.Director@usma.edu]
Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2011 10:54 AM
Subject: Weekly Update from Boo Corrigan, Director of Army Athletics
Importance: High

Dear Friends,
As the fall semester winds down and term-ending exams begin next week, it was appropriate that we celebrated a tremendous academic achievement this week.

Firstie football player Andrew Rodriguez was honored by the National Football Foundation with the William V. Campbell Trophy at the organization’s annual awards dinner on Tuesday night. The award is given to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete and is widely considered the highest academic achievement a college football player can earn.  Andrew was chosen as the nation’s No. 1 scholar-athlete among the thousands of players who participate in college football at every level.

He is the first Army player to win the award and the first service academy player since Air Force’s Chris Howard won the inaugural award in 1990.

Andrew’s focus will quickly turn back to the field this week as the 112th Army-Navy Game presented by  USAA looms this Saturday. Fans can get into the spirit this week, beginning Wednesday evening with “This Week in Army Football.” The weekly radio show is held at the Firstie Club, and this week’s edition will air at 6 p.m. Following the radio show, fans can head up the hill to Daly Field for the annual bonfire and pep rally at 7 p.m. On Thursday, the official send-off for the team will be at 4:30 p.m. at Michie Stadium. The team’s departure will be followed by a Mule Retirement Center at 4:50 p.m. and the annual Goat-Engineer Flag Football Game at 5 p.m.

It was also a big week for the first-class cadets here at West Point. The seniors found out which branch of the Army they will serve in after graduation. We would like to congratulate the entire Class of 2012 as their 47-month West Point experience enters its final stages and they begin to transition into their military careers.

There were several outstanding performances to celebrate last week, starting in the pool. Ayman Andrews was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after breaking meet records in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the Zippy Invitational in Akron. His 100 butterfly time also broke Academy and Akron pool records and hit the NCAA “B” qualifying mark. Diver Chris Nguyen was named the Patriot League Diver of the Week for the third time in five weeks after placing fourth in the one-meter and fifth in the three-meter competition at the Big Al Invitational.

Women’s basketball player Jen Hazlett was honored as the Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time in her career after averaging 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Jen recorded her first double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the team’s win over Hawai’i.
Below are detailed updates and notes on all of Army’s sports currently in competition. Thank you again for all of your support of Army Athletics. We appreciate all of your contributions to our success.

Be well.

Go Army!

Boo

Men’s Basketball (3-5, 0-0 Patriot League)
·         The Black Knights split a pair of games, losing to NJIT, 54-53, and defeating Binghamton, 70-50.
·         Army’s victory at Binghamton snapped a nine-game losing streak in games played away from West Point. It was also the team’s largest road win since a 21-point victory at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2009.
·         Cow F Ella Ellis led the team in scoring in both games, going for 11 against the Highlanders and 20 points in the win over the Bearcats. Ellis leads the team at 16.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in 10 straight games. Ellis is the Patriot League’s fifth-leading scorer.
·         Army shot just 2-for-24 from three-point range against NJIT, but came back to shoot 11-for-19 from deep in the win at Binghamton.
·         Firstie Julian Simmons scored 14 points at Binghamton and is now just 11 markers shy of 1,000 for his career.
·         Army plays two games this week before taking time off for term ending exams. The Black Knights are at Hudson Valley rival Marist on Wednesday and La Salle on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball (6-3, 0-0 Patriot League)
·         Army split a pair of games last week. The Black Knights defeated Hawai’i (55-51) in the first meeting between the two programs on Thursday night at Christl Arena. Army fell short in a 68-64 contest at Loyola (Md.) on Saturday afternoon.
·         Sophomore guard/forward Jen Hazlett averaged 15.5 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game on her way to her first career Anaconda Patriot League Player of the Week award on Monday. She is the second Black Knight honored this season, as freshman forward Olivia Schretzman copped Rookie of the Week plaudits the previous Monday. Hazlett has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and ranks second in the Patriot League averaging 13.6 points per game.
·         Army, picked to finish seventh in the league, is currently atop the Patriot League with a 6-3 record.
·         Army’s six wins this season have come by an average of 17.3 points. The team’s three losses are by a combined 12 points.
·         Army leads the conference in scoring defense (49.3), scoring margin (+10.2), field goal percentage defense (.336), three-point field goal percentage (.342), rebounding defense (33.7), rebounding margin (+6.0) and turnover margin (+1.1). See page 6 for complete conference leaders.
·         Three firstie women’s basketball players received their branch assignments in a special ceremony last Thursday night immediately following the team’s win over Hawai’i. COL Donna Brazil, the team’s head officer representative, presented the trio with their respective envelopes. Co-captains Kait Goodall and Meagan Doucette branched Aviation, while student assistant coach Erin Jankowski branched Engineers.
·         Army returns to Christl Arena on Tuesday night to take on Binghamton in a non-conference showdown. The Black Knights are 5-1 at home this season. Army will face Penn at the historic Palestra on Saturday night in Philadelphia. The game marks the team’s final test before TEE Week ensues.

Football (3-8)

·         The Black Knights are now 1-7-6 overall and 1-5-4 in Atlantic Hockey Association games following a loss and tie with Mercyhurst at Tate Rink. Following a 2-1 setback on Friday, Army skated to a 3-3 overtime on Saturday.
·         Army played with just 17 skaters due to a rash of injuries and one suspension on Saturday. Army head coach Brian Riley opted to go with only five defensemen in the contest as the Black Knights tied their sixth game this season.
·         Marcel Alvarez and Mike Hull each scored a goal and handed out an assist in the tie. Rob Tadazak made 33 saves Mike Henderson also netted a tally and Maurice AlvarezMac Lalor and Jon Bobb collected assists.

Members of Ross’ family as well as a slew of former players were on the ice for the face-off.
·         Prior to Friday’s game, goalie Ryan Leets was presented with his league Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the highest grade-point average among goalies. Giving Wall Update as of 11/30/11

Dear Classmates:

First, I trust we will Beat Navy this weekend. I hope to see many of you there.

Second, thank all of you who have so generously given your time, energy, and monies in support of our Class’ Legacy, the NCEA. This month we are pleased to welcome several new donors to the Giving Wall. A shout out to:

     Fritz Hausman (D-1),
Mitch Green (B-2), Joe Alexander (C-2), Rick Gass (E-2), Frank Hurff (F-2),
     John Adams (D-3),
Chip Lauckhardt (B-4), and John Gallogly (F-4)

By the numbers, here’s a look at where we stand:

….we are 18 months into our campaign. 30% of the time we have to raise our goal is elapsed.

….278 of 707 surviving classmates (38%) have thus far participated. That’s 429 classmates we need the support of as we go forward in the coming months.

….the above 278 have contributed/pledged approximately $900,000 collectively. I have no doubt that some will dig deeper and give even more in the coming months and years.

….with AT&Ts pledge, we are only 41% of the way to our Class’ commitment to USMA and the Nation to raise an additional $3.1M to fund the NCEA’s Endowment. Again, we need the 62% of the class that’s still sitting on the sidelines to engage.

The NCEA makes a difference. It deserves our complete support as a class. Make it a priority for you in these coming weeks and months. This is our chance to effect change in the next generation. We can help make the ethical behavior of our leaders a priority once again.  Can you help with $1970/yr through Dec 2015? Or perhaps $19.70/month til 12/15?
We want your name on the Wall…we need you name on the Wall.

As we near year end and some of you are looking for tax deductions, remember that any contributions to the NCEA are 100% deductible. Upon receipt of your year-end donation, AOG will issue you a letter for your tax records. For most, this is an easy way for you to get the government to help fund up to ½ the donation.

Will your company (if you are still working) match? If yes, we can help you with that paperwork as well.

Finally, be sure to look over the Giving Wall and the Regimental and Company stats this month. Kudos to our Class leaders: F-2 has contributed over $174k, and F-4 has 63% of their Company mate’s names on the Giving Wall.

Happy Holidays to you and your families.

SWI,

Gil Pritchard

Jim Mowery Sends: Re Pete Spivy

Jim Mowery Sends:

To the Class of 70 reference Pete Spivy,

Bob Wetherill and Jim Mowery and his wife Jenn went to see Pete in Orlando, Florida for 3 days each with an overlap of two days.
Here is their report to the class.

Pete is in a nursing home in Ocoee, Florida (Ocoee Health Care Center • 1556 Maguire Road • Ocoee, FL 34761 • (407) 877-2272) fighting a battle against brain cancer, which is complicated by a heart condition that precludes an operation to remove any of the five tumors on his brain.

His principle care giver and legal guardian is his daughter Annette Spivy. She has been shouldering the burden of his care for quite awhile now. She has done a magnificent job of ensuring Pete's care and comfort. Pete has to be so very proud of her. We sure are.

She is spelled in her efforts about once a month by her brother Bert who lives about two hours away.

While taking care of her Dad she is going to school, working, and dealing with numerous legal matters.

If you would like to see Pete, please contact Annette. Her phone number is (407) 616-7288 and her e-mail is annettespivy@yahoo.com.

Please do not try to call Pete directly. Please go through Annette.

As calling is off the table, recommend that if you want to contact Pete that you send him a card or e-mail a note to Annette and she can print it out and give it to Pete to read.

If you are able (jobs, family, and many other things may preclude visiting) we do recommend visiting.
Pete enjoyed hearing old stories and the company of two of his classmates over the three days that we were able to visit with him.

As a special note Bob and Jim would like to thank Ed Brady, Class of '60 (our BEST Physics P ever) and Bert Spivy, Class of '60 (and Pete's brother) for all they did to put us back into contact with Pete.

Pete as most of you know as always been a very private person. We think that initially he felt telling anyone outside his family about his health challenges would place an undue burden on them.

Bert drove from New Mexico to Florida to "counsel" Pete and ask him to let Annette pass the word around to those of his class that she knew or had contacted her.

This report to the Class is possible because Ed Brady's and Bert Spivy's aged wisdom were applied to the situation.

We hope that some of you are in a place in your life where you can come visit Pete.

We will keep the class apprised of the situation through the AOG which will resend any further reports.

With Guarded Optimism,

Bob Wetherill and Jim Mowery

LEAD Summit 2011 mirrored the National Conference on Ethics in American (NCEA) held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point

November 15, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Inaugural LEAD Summit a Tremendous Success

LEAD Summit 2011, organized and hosted by students in the LSUS LEAD program, was held on the LSUS campus on Friday, November 11th.  Approximately 150 high school students and faculty from sixteen regional high schools in Webster, Red River, Desoto, Bossier, and Caddo parishes, along with several Barksdale Air Force Base Airmen, and over fifty LSUS LEAD students participated in the event.   Organizers and attendees hailed the first ever conference a phenomenal success and plans to make LEAD Summit 2012 even bigger and more far-reaching have already begun.

LEAD Summit participants spent most of the day in groups with students from other high schools and a LEAD or military mentor discussing ethical and moral issues they face in their daily lives in a roundtable open discussion format.  The Summit was opened by the Barksdale Honor Guard presenting the colors and the pledge of allegiance.  Intermittently throughout the day participants sat in on LEAD student presentations on leadership, character, honor, integrity, morality, ethics, and the elements of leaders of character.  Participants also attended the LSUS Veteran’s Day Program.  Air Force Colonel Robert Fournier was the keynote speaker at the Summit lunch which was followed up by a lively question and answer session that also included lunch special guests Air Force Brigadier General Peyton Cole and Lt. Colonel Charlie Morgan.

LEAD Summit 2011 mirrored the National Conference on Ethics in American (NCEA) held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  The purpose of the venture was to promote and facilitate character and leadership development within area high school students.  The event was organized and significantly paid for by LEAD students along with additional generous underwriting support from Mr. George Khoury.

LEAD is LSUS’s unique inter-institutional character and leadership education and development academic and community outreach and development program.

Summit attendee Alex Parker from Northwood High School was the winner of the i-Pad raffle held in the closing ceremony.

LEAD Summit 2012 is tentatively scheduled for Monday, November 12, 2012.

Army Scholarship Fund - Veterans Day 2011

Jeff Gault Sends -

Fellow Classmates and Friends

Veterans Day is fast approaching. A day when our nation pauses to reflect on the service and sacrifices of our military men and women. This offers a good opportunity to help spread the word about what the Army Scholarship Foundation does to support and honor Army families. It also provides an opportunity to help honor our fallen class son, 1LT Scott Love.
We would ask as we approach Veterans Day and near the end of the year, that you might consider helping to continue to memorialize Scott and to assist army families with a tax deductible donation to the Army Scholarship Foundation in your end of year giving plans. Our soldiers and their families make tremendous sacrifices on our behalf and in defense of our freedom; a donation to the Foundation is but one small way we can say "thank you" to our soldiers and their families. We accept tax deductible donations by check to ASF, 11700 Preston Road, Suite 660-301, Dallas, TX 75230, or by credit card on our web site:www.ArmyScholarshipFoundation.org

Thanks for your service to our Nation and for your consideration,
Jeff
www.ArmyScholarshipFoundation.org
The Army Scholarship Foundation is no longer accepting scholarship applications for academic year 2011-2012. The deadline for scholarship applications for academic year 2012-2013 is May 1, 2012.

Letter from ROTC Cadet (NCEA 2011 Attendee) Chad Bishop to Classmate Rich Measner

Hello, Sir.

This is Cadet Chad Bishop with ETSU ROTC. You asked if I would contact you, at the Hall of Fame ceremony, in regards to how the NCEA went at the USMA. I am pleased to report to you that it was one of the best experiences of my life. From the reception and in-processing to the trip home, all was planned well and very beneficial. I met some great people and gained meaningful friendships. The way I thought about ethics was challenged, grown, and also supported in other ways. I am very thankful for the opportunity and have been willing to share notes and the entire experience with my fellow peers.
I have attached a letter I am trying to send to the USMA in hopes that it will recognize the cadets I speak about in that letter. I also typed the letter as a simple expression of my gratitude for their investment in my personal growth.
Respectfully, Cadet Bishop

Attached Letter send by CDT Bishop to USMA:

National Conference on Ethics in America
Upon returning home to East Tennessee State University and the welcoming color of the mountains which proclaim the glory of God, memories and impressions of the USMA are still pressing heavily on my mind and soul. The NCEA is held within the realm of a place where Duty, Honor, and Country are ever present. The history of the USMA is preserved with every facet on the Post, thus propelling the ethics and values the military academy is based upon. This short letter is not a recap of the events that took place at the conference, it is much more. This letter is a thank-you to the founders of West Point like George Washington. It is a thank-you to those that organized and facilitated the event and round table discussions like LTC Brian Imiola (F2), and finally this letter serves as a thank-you to the influence and hospitality of those like Firstie CO Doug Gain (go Ducks) and one of his Platoon Sergeants Jake Roberts. My time at West Point is one of the most informational and ethical experiences I have ever had. While the views of a cadet may not be extremely important, I feel it is crucial I send my gratitude.
When I heard of the opportunity to attend the NCEA I knew it was an event to take advantage of. At ETSU, LTC Jeffress informed MSIII cadets in the Buccaneer Battalion of the opportunity. I was not sure if I would be the one qualified to go and I was unsure what to expect if I was chosen to attend. The NCEA took place over our fall break so I must admit that was holding me back in a way, as fall break is a time to relax and visit with friends and family.
As the sole delegate from ETSU I arrived at West Point and began in-processing. The first night I met Doug Gain and Jake Roberts. Roberts was the cadet with whom my room assignment connected me. The hospitality of Roberts was exceptional. Roberts offered me his bed and slept on a cot during the whole duration of the conference. This was beyond what he needed to do. Roberts was very busy with class work and other responsibilities, which resulted in early mornings and late nights for him. Still, Roberts was very hospitable and concerned about his delegate which made a great impression on me about the ethics of USMA cadets.
Another cadet I feel needs recognition is Doug Gain. Gain was the small group leader of F2. Not only myself but others in the group were very impressed with his knowledge, willingness to answer questions, and consideration for the well-being of the delegates with whom he was placed to lead. From the first night at West Point to the moment I left the hallowed academy, Gain went beyond the extra mile for each delegate he came in contact with and more specifically, my-self. Gain could have been complacent with his responsibilities at the conference and only done what he needed to. I spent more time with Gain than any other delegate or cadet, along with three or four others. We were a close group of guys which built a lasting friendship, had unforgettable discussions on ethics, and influenced each other to be the best we could be. Outside of the conference and “free time”, Gain did not go to his room to work on other things that were perhaps, equally or more important. Gain gave us a tour that was very extensive on more than one occasion, in which he made sure our questions were answered and he was always telling me in depth what each part of the USMA was about, describing a large variety of topics including locations of the Hudson river and the importance of them, statues, buildings, books in the library and much more. He did not stop there. Gain thoroughly trained cadets and civilians in weapons systems, gave knowledge on army history, took us to bible studies, and even physical training which allowed us to see just how to “crave torture” as we were pushed to do our best on the IOCT. I will admit my experience of the USMA was greatly marked in a positive way through the role Doug Gain played during my time there.
With only a basic knowledge of the USMA as an outsider, after attending this conference I have been overwhelmed with gratitude, the beauty of the historic academy, and the seriousness cadets take to the Duty of selfless service shown by many of those at West Point, specifically those mentioned above. So I thank-you for the opportunity, the work you have put into the event, and overall, your concern for ethics in America. I have nothing but great things to say about our United States Military Academy. My time there was valuable in many ways, educational, and a complete enjoyment.

Sincerely, Chad Bishop (East Tennessee State University)

NCEA 2011 Recap

Classmates: NCEA 2011 Recap

As you know, the NCEA was declared “mission essential” by the Supe this past year and included as part of the current AOG Capital Campaign. Thanks to all the classmates who’s tireless efforts on behalf of the NCEA and the Class 70 have made this possible.

Wow!!! What a Conference. A few highlights…..

…..Col. Waters (OIC, SCPME) and LTC. Turner (OIC, NCEA) both agreed that “the NCEA is the highlight of their year and that this year was the best ever.” Congratulations to the SCPME and their staff and all the cadets for their support. Without them none of this is possible. We are both grateful and indebted to them for their selfless efforts.

.....Approximately 187 student delegates (not including the USMA cadets) from some 93 colleges and universities, and another 30 Faculty Advisors. All records for attendance!

.....Great buzz on the speakers, content, organization, conduct and presentation of this year's event. NCEA 2011 was, by all accounts (still need to review the delegate feedback forms), the best NCEA yet.

….. go to the NCEA website and click on the NCEA 2011 conference guide, speaker videos, delegate testimonials, etc. - seehttp://usma1970.westpointaog.com/USMA-Class-of-1970/ncea.html or direct http://www.usma.edu/uscc/scpme/ncea/index.html It’s guaranteed to make you pop your chest up, stand taller, and be proud.

.....Also, the Don & Betsy Blakeslee very generously hosted an exceptionally nice class reception and dinner at their home on Monday night. Chez Blakeslee is the newly crowned 5 Star restaurant in the WP/Highland Falls area. Rumor has it Don is seriously considering enrolling at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) upon retirement. Based on the quality of the dinner he served us, he should be recruited by the CIA as an instructor.

.....Kudos to Pat Sculley, Speakers, the Mentors, and all 25 of our classmates in attendance. This Conference continues to inspire, lead, and help create the next generation of ethical leaders for our country. Being with these young men and women for 4 days is an honor and a privilege. The Class 70 is doing truly noble work. We are making a difference.

…..finally, we were pleased to welcome AT&T as a presenting sponsor for the three years. In addition to a sizable monetary contribution over this period, AT&T committed substantial other resources to us to help further build the reputation and capabilities of the NCEA. special thanks to Ron Spears for “spearsheading “ this AT&T initiative in support of the Class 70, the NCEA, West Point, and the nation. Think Possible.

We (the class and SCPME) are out ahead for planning for next year. Conference dates for next year are: 10/14-17/2012 (Sunday evening Delegate Meet & Greet thru Wednesday evening's Banquet and Keynote Address) at USMA. Mark on calendars now! Several Speakers are already confirmed and NCEA 2012 Registration will open up right after the start of the New Year.

SWI.
