Dear Classmates,

This Memorial Day, as you pause to consider the sacrifices of our nation's all volunteer force of today's and yesterday's soldiers, I ask that you remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to our country - to include Lieutenant Scott Love, and the families they left behind.  It is often difficult to know how to properly say "Thank You" to those who have given the last full measure. The Army Scholarship Foundation provides a way for us to honor our nation's soldiers for their sacrifices.  By making a tax deductible donation, you can thank and honor soldiers and their families by assisting us in providing scholarship funds to the family members of our soldiers who often otherwise could not afford to go to college. 

 

There is no better way to honor our soldiers and especially their famiiles by offering them the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams.

2012 NCEA Colorado Trail Hike Pledge

We are still short of our class goal to fund the National Conference on Ethics in America in perpetuity, so, in addition to continuing our campaign for direct and corporate donations, Classmates (USMA 1970 Cadet Company E2) Whit Wise and Dave Schroeder have decided to hike the Colorado Trail (from June 17 through July 26, 2012), which runs from Waterton Canyon just west of Denver across the mountains and ends in Southwest Colorado at the town of Durango. It is almost 486 miles long and runs as high as 13300 feet in elevation. They also plan to hike to the top of one or two 14000 foot peaks which lie near the trail. 4 E-2 members have pledged up to a dollar per mile for the total miles completed by Whit and Dave, meaning a commitment of up to $1000 if (actually, when) they both complete the hike. Injuries, accidents, illness, weather problems, lack of commitment and possibly wild animals are the only things standing in their way. We see this as a win/win for our NCEA Fund Drive by having additional Class members pledge one dollar (or more) per mile travelled, up to a combined maximum of 1000 miles. Greetings!
 
My name is COL (Ret) Fareed Betros, USMA ’81. I am writing to request your support in circulating information to all members of your West Point class about a 4-day patriotic event called the Nashville Connection – Heroes Salute, www.thenashvilleconnection.com.
 
My wife and I are the organizers of this event through our 501C3 non-profit organization called Families United Toward Universal Respect – FUTURE, www.womenforfuture.org.
 
This is our 2nd year hosting the Nashville Connection – Heroes Salute. It is a patriotic salute to honor our active duty military, veterans, and their family members and to keep them in the forefront of our minds, so we in our communities never forget the service they provide to our country. Our event takes place from 27-30 June 2012 in Greenville, South Carolina.
 
We are in great need of assistance in the area of sponsorships and donations. We are trying to raise $15,000 by June 1st to meet our organization's financial goals for this event. Proceeds received will be used to support several local and national veteran charities. During our event, we honor all veterans, but this year, we pay special tribute to our Vietnam War era veterans. There will be patriotic activities, entertainment, and an incredible singer and songwriter workshop and competition.
 
This year, we are showcasing the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (a 253 foot-long replica of the Vietnam Wall) that will be on public display. The WALL will be escorted into Greenville by approximately 2000 riders from the Patriot Guard and Rolling Thunder Groups.
 
Our event is also an amazing opportunity for aspiring singers, songwriters, and bands from throughout the United States to gain a leg up in the music industry. We have Grammy Award winning Nashville music talent coming to Greenville to provide professional workshops, a performance competition, powerful networking opportunities, and a Heroes Salute Gala.
 
We can provide documents showing our 501C3 tax status from the IRS and provide details of how proceeds will be divided among the charities we are supporting.

Reporting the Death of Lawrence B. Wilkins, H3

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence B. Wilkins of Herndon, VA died Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 64 years of age, following a brief battle with cancer.

A 1970 graduate of the United States Military Academy, he retired from the United States Army after over 22 years of service. The United States of America awarded him with the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, and many other awards.

After his retirement, Lieutenant Colonel Wilkins worked with ASQ Section 5011 serving the section twice as Section Chair, and for many years as Education Chair. At the time of his death, he was employed by Analytical Services, where he worked for 15 years.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilkins was born in Philadelphia, PA. A self-taught comedian, he enjoyed science fiction/fantasy, model trains, the Muppets, dogs, and spending time with his family.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilkins is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susanne V. Wilkins of Herndon, VA; son Bradford Wilkins of Herndon, VA; daughters Beverly Wilkins of Dacula, GA and Carolyn Wilkins Davis of Herndon, VA; and a sister Donna Barker of Easton, MD.

Interment with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on March 21 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society .
